Barnacle Bill Costume is just, "OK."
Being a pirate fan I was very excited about this costume - but I was ultimatly let down.... read on:
Ordering online was easy and delivery of an accurately processed order was prompt. :-) However there are some issues with this overall really nice costume that you should be aware of in order to make an informed purchase decision. First off – the sizing charts is complete BOGUS! If buycostume.com’s size chart reads that you need a XXL – you’re straight out of luck – PERIOD! In reality if you’re a XL in the chart order the XXL. If L then order a XL, and so forth. I am an XL size according to the size chart and chose to buy a XXL to have a little extra room. My XXL costume is too small even though I am well below the measurements noted for a XXL. What the flip is that about? The belt is over 12 inches too short, the shirt is very snug, the pants straight up will not fit and the jacket is very snug. I can make the needed alterations to make it work, but this should not be the case when spending this amount of money for a costume.
The Hat is the worst part of this ensemble. The Hat is awkward and unbalanced in size/proportion. The front point is like a rhino’s horn jetting from your head – not cool. Nor does the Hat “unfold” to make for an appealing costume accessory, but rather retains a funky shape that is difficult to reshape into a presentable Hat. With a lot of work perhaps you might be able to shape the Hat into something acceptable.
The Boot Covers run a fast second to the Hat as they appear to be made from the same material with the same folding issues as the Hat. The Boot Covers also have very small elastic loops sewn on to secure the Boot Covers to your shoes… VERY SMALL elastic loops that will maybe slip over a child’s shoe without breaking, but in no way will it do the same for an adult’s foot. You will have to make your own alterations to the Boot Covers to keep them attached to your shoes so they don’t flop around with every step you take. On the plus side the Boot Covers do look pretty good as a costume accessory.
The shirt and pants are made of VERY thin material and are all but see through, BUT - look very dead pirate-ish. Both the shirt and pants have large plastic “wounds” as part of the item that lends a nice feel to a dead pirate. Just wear something under them if you're not into exhibitionism. Also, the black belt and red/white striped sash serve very nice for their intended use and add to the “feel” of the costume. Just be aware the I find that the belt/sash is the same size for all costume sizes – a real bad oversight in trying to cut a cost/production corner if you’re looking at a Large, XL, or XXL size.
The Jacket is a great piece. It is made from loose weave burlap, similar to a burlap bag or coffee sack (but a loose weave, not a tight weave like a coffee bag). It does not feel nice to the touch, but then again it’s not supposed to. The grey color really adds to the look/feel of the costume. Like the shirt and pants the Jacket has small plastic wounds incorporated into the sleeves that continue the “dead” feeling of the costume. The only negative comment I can make about the Jacket is that the edges are do NOT have a seam to keep the loose weave of the burlap material from unraveling. Very much like those cartoons where a kitten plays with a hanging piece of yarn and next thing you know the whole sweater is unraveled and in a pile on the floor.
Overall - a nice costume... IF you can get it sized properly to your size... Should you order and receive a costume that properly fits then the only issue you'll have is altering the Boot Covers to stay attached to your shoes and tinking with the Hat to make it look OK. Other than that this is a really nice costume and I recommend it for those pirate fans out there... Have a great Halloween, everyone!
