Title: A Little Dissapointed
Date: Sep 04, 2008
The overall concept of this prop is great. However, I was a little disappointed when it arrived and I saw the quality of the materials it was made out of. It's basically plastic covered cardboard held together with velcro and the chain is plastic, so it doesn't make a chain rattling sound. I think it will work fine in a dark room with some fog added. The kids will love it, but the adults won't be as impressed.

Title: Disappointing
Date: Aug 31, 2008
Okay, to begin with, the description says that this product is made of plastic, but that doesn't quite explain it. It is plastic coated cardboard, so you can imagine how strong/ durable it is from that. It just seemed really wimpy to get some plastic coated cardboard with a little motor for $50.
Well I decided to open the product since the box was banged up and already halfway opened when it arrived - just to make sure no pieces got lost in transit. I went ahead and put it together, and the instructions are not great, also the pictures in it are kind of hard to decipher (and I'm a seasoned Ikea veteran).
In case you buy this and are trying to put it together let me just tell you:
Step 2: part A doesn't actually attach to itself in any way, just form a square and later you'll make it stick when you attach B and C.
Step 3: Part B does not actually adhere in any way to part C, you just lay one on top of the other and velcro them to part A
Steps 4 and 5: it doesn't say this, but fold down where there is a line all the way around and velcro the corners of A together before you try to put the doors (D and C) on. It's easier to put the doors on this way, and also the unit looks better at this point and seems a little sturdier.
Back from my digression, once I had put the thing together and put the batteries in, I put it up against a wall like the description says you can, and the mechanism didn't work. I tried detaching B and C, turning them over and reattaching upside down and also flipping the doors over, and it still didn't work. The mechanism is just not meant to be vertical. It only works of you have the unit laying down. I realize that real cellar doors are on the floor, but the picture and description lead you to believe that it could be leaned against a wall to seem like you just have a small door to a dungeon in the next room or something.
The good side: if you are buying this to put on the ground, it is a neat idea and looks fairly good, especially if viewed from a distance or at night. Also, the noise sensor works well. It doesn't have to be some really loud noise to set it off.
