When you dress up as the Statue of Liberty, it’s important to be savvy about a few historical facts. First, she was a gift from France to the United States of America on October 28, 1886. (That’s only three days before Halloween!) Back then she was originally called Liberty Enlightening the World and was designed by a French guy named Frederic Bartholdi who set off his own political fireworks to have her sculpted into the famous landmark that she is today. In 1924 she was designated as a national monument in New York Harbor and became a welcome sight to immigrants who were hungry for a slice of American pie and eager to fulfill the American Dream. Now she beckons on Ellis Island, with New York City beside her and is a symbol of freedom and democracy. (With liberty and justice for all!)
