The Avengers Character Bios

Captain America

Captain America, a.k.a. Steve Rogers, played in Avengers: Age of Ultron and other hit movies by Chris Evans, is often considered the team leader of the Avengers. Steve Rogers was a scrawny, puny weakling before he enlisted to fight on the side of America and the Allied Forces against the evil German Nazis in World War II. Already a super patriot, Rogers' physique and fighting abilities were transformed by Abraham Erskine's Super Soldier Serum into the superheroic traits of the great Captain America that millions of readers and filmgoers know and love today. To become an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the new millennium, he had to be frozen and then awakened after 70 years, at which time he teamed up with Iron Man and the other superfriends. He always carries his Captain America shield into battle.

Iron Man

Iron Man, a.k.a. Tony Stark of Stark Enterprises, portrayed in the Marvel blockbusters by Robert Downey Jr., is a superhero, of course, but also a famous billionaire, patriot, inventor and playboy, much to the chagrin of Pepper Potts. "I am Iron Man," Tony Stark says, "The suit and I are one," which means he seldom leaves his mansion without his high-tech supersuit and glowing Arc Reactor. Luckily for Comic-Con attendees, midnight moviegoers, Iron Man cosplayers, and other Avengers costume collectors, he frequently invents new suits of armor to aid him in flying, fighting and additional world-saving responsibilities. He has the quickest wit of the Avengers, which is quite a contrast to the grunting Hulk.

Thor played in the Avengers franchise and other box-office smashes by Chris Hemsworth, is the God of Thunder in both the Marvel universe and ancient Norse mythology. The bulky, muscle-bound warrior-prince hails from Asgard, is the son of Odin, and is believed to be the protector of earth. The other Avengers and the citizens of the world are right to have faith in Thor’s godlike strength, since his powers are genuinely superhuman, what with him being a god and all. His ever-present war hammer controls the weather and helps him in the fight against his brother and arch-nemesis, Loki. His horned helmet protects his long, flowing blonde hair and looks amazing, which no doubt helped him become a fan favorite of moviegoers and comic book readers across America.

Black Widow

Black Widow, a.k.a. Natasha Romanoff, portrayed in the Avengers films by Scarlett Johansson, is a spy, an assassin, the only woman in the Avengers, and, in her skin-tight black catsuit, is arguably one of the all-time sexiest superheroes in the Marvel universe as well. Born in Russia, the red-haired Black Widow began her butt-kicking career performing espionage for the KGB before she teamed up with Hawkeye and joined the Avengers team. She is always a popular character at Comic-Con in San Diego and other science fiction, fantasy and comic book conventions around the world, not only for her hot looks, but also for her physical fighting style.

Hulk, a.k.a. Dr. Bruce Banner, played in the Avengers pictures by Mark Ruffalo, is a brilliant, mild-mannered scientist in a laboratory by day, and a raging green beast with rippling muscles and superhuman strength in battles by night -- or anytime he gets angry, which is a lot, because that's just what the Hulk and his green fists do. Hulk smash! Bruce Banner first transformed into the Hulk when one of his nuclear experiments went awry and he was exposed to gamma radiation. Often called "The Incredible Hulk," this raging, rampaging creature defeats enemies with his size and strength by crushing, punching and throwing things. "The madder he gets, the stronger he becomes," people say about him. "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry," he says about himself. The other Avengers are green with envy regarding his powerful physique, even if it is fueled by gamma rays and aggression.

Hawkeye, a.k.a. Clint Barton, portrayed on screen by Jeremy Renner, is rare among the Avengers franchise and the entire Marvel universe because he does not have a superpower. What he does have, however, is incredible eyesight, amazing agility, and arguably the greatest marksmanship skills in the galaxy when he shoots arrows from his bow. (Bonus question: Who would win an archery competition between Hawkeye, Robin Hood, Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen character from the Hunger Games movies, and Merida from Disney/Pixar's Brave? We don't know the answer, but we do know that we'd wait in line to buy tickets to a midnight showing of that movie!) In addition to being a master archer, Hawkeye is adroit at throwing knives, boomerangs and other dangerous projectiles.

The Avengers Group Costume Ideas

Older than the Avengers themselves, Captain America first appeared in Timely Comics – the predecessor to Marvel Comics – in 1941. A patriotic super soldier, Captain America battled against the Axis powers of the time, just as Allied forces did during World War II. He was the comic’s most popular character before he left publication in 1950. Marvel resurrected the character years later and made Captain America an Avenger in 1964. For the 51 years since, Captain America has remained in publication and remains one of the most widely known and popular superheroes fighting evil today.

The Captain, as he is sometimes referred to, is known for his red, white and blue uniform, which features a white star in the center of his chest. He is also known for the iconic, circular, invincible shield he carries in his left arm. If you or someone in your family is looking to capture this look, you’ll find everything you need at BuyCostumes. We have Captain America costumes for men and women, boys and girls, even babies and pets. Create your own Captain America look with costumes starting as simple as a shirt and moving all the way to our Elite Adult Costume. Friends & Couples Avengers Costume Ideas

Iron Man and Thor

One’s a man of metal, the other’s a god from another dimension, and both of these lovable characters make for great costumes. Iron Man and Thor are iconic Avengers whose quick wit and raw power appeal to fans of all ages. At BuyCostumes we have everything you need to create the perfect look for each of them, from full-body costumes to helmets, gloves and accessories. Whatever you need to transform into Iron Man or Thor, it’s here. Now the flying? That’s up to you.

Hawkeye and Hulk

Power and precision best define Hulk and Hawkeye. Hulk smashes while Hawkeye strikes, and either option is bad for evil doers who would threaten the people of New York. Costumes for both of these popular characters are available to fans of all sizes, and we also have the gloves, masks and accessories you need to create a smashing or striking good look.

Black Widow and Spider

Looking for a cute costume combo for mom and baby? Mom can go as the crime-fighting superhero Black Widow and baby can match the spider theme with our orange and purple Itsy Bitsy Spider toddler costume. Your friends and family will be impressed with your creativity when they see you coordinating “spider” costumes at the party.

Iron Man and Robber

Crime doesn’t pay and Iron Man would never let any crook off the hook. This themed set of costumes works perfectly by allowing your child to play the Avenger’s Iron Man and his best friend, Fido, to play the hapless criminal whose plan has been foiled using our Prisoner Dog Pet Costume. As Iron Man says, "The man makes the suit," but the two of you together make this costume combo great.

Movie Star Themed Costumes

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. has been one of America's favorite, most bankable (and occasionally most troubled) movie stars from his earliest roles in Weird Science and the Pick-up Artist (and a season on Saturday Night Live) to his current status as both a heartthrob and box office draw in two different blockbuster franchises (Iron Man/The Avengers, of course, but also Sherlock Holmes).

So, while other couples costumes and group costumes at your Halloween party or pub crawl will no doubt include the Academy Award-nominated Tony Stark actor as part of their Avengers ensemble, we're giving you permission to stand out from the pack and express your true creativity and humor in your coordinating costume choice of two Robert Downey Jrs.: Iron Man and Sherlock! Both characters are available in men's and women's sizes for you and your partner in crime, whether you want to be Iron Man, don a Sherlock Holmes Hat or show off your skills with a Sexy Women's Detective Costume. Bonus points for dressing up as a third Robert Downey Jr.: Charlie Chaplin, whom Downey portrayed in a 1992 film.

Chris Hemsworth

When Chris Hemsworth donned his Thor suit, he secured his status as a leading man, box office draw and favorite actor of men and women across the globe. The muscular Australian hunk and Avengers star was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 2014 -- the latest accolade in one of the fastest rising careers in Hollywood -- and his ongoing work as Thor in a series of Marvel films ensures that midnight moviegoers, Comic-Con attendees and comic book cosplayers will be dressing up as the Norse god for years to come.

If you and a friend are superfans of the super cool Chris Hemsworth, why not show off your devotion -- as well as your wit and cleverness -- by wearing the couples costume or group costume of multiple Chris Hemsworths on Halloween? One film fan can dress up like the Avengers' Thor, of course, and the other cinephile in your duo can go out on the town in a racecar driver costume and helmet. Your new friends at the bar or the party will laugh when they learn that you're dressed up like Formula One racer James Hunt, whom Hemsworth portrayed in the Ron Howard-directed movie Rush.
