Can’t-Miss Costume Events: Monday, June 30 Edition

T-minus 24 days and counting to Comic Con 2014 in San Diego. We know – we can’t wait either. Here’s this week’s list of our top picks of costume conventions and events around the country, to tide you over. Also, be sure to check out the Events hub on to get inspiration for your costume. From comic cons to renaissance faires, there’s something for every occasion!

Plenty of Time to Plan: (July 13 – 19)

  • Ancient City Con (Jacksonville, FL)
This three-day event bills itself as “Northeast Florida’s Premiere Multi-Genre Fandom Convention.” There are costume and cosplay contests aplenty, as well as gaming galore.
  • Detcon1 (Detroit, MI)
Detcon1 is all about the very best in science fiction! Aside from welcoming costumed attendees, the organizers are also looking for costuming programming at this time, per their official website. If you love costumes as much as us, that might just be up your alley!
  • The Great Lakes Comic Expo (Clinton Township, MI)
Cosplayers get free general admission at this event! For us, that’s reason enough to check it out if you’re in the area.
  • Hoshicon (Charlotte, NC)
You’ll find everything anime at this North Carolina convention. Gaming, cosplay, and Japanese culture dominate all three days of the event.
  • Ryu-Kon (Buffalo, NY)
This is an anime convention that goes beyond anime: horror is the theme this year, and steampunk is a huge part of it, too! Sign up to be a part of their Minecraft LARP (that’ssss a niccce cosssstume you have there…)
  • San Japan (San Antonio, TX)
San Japan is the biggest pop culture convention in San Antonio, with tens of thousands of annual visitors. Star guests this year include video game producer and composer Akira Yamaoka, and Internet comedy troupe Team Fourstar.
  • Ultracon of South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
Costumes and cosplay are just a part of this con, where hundreds of collectors from all over Florida gather to sell and trade rare collectible. The event’s not related to these Ultracons, but we’re sure they’re just as welcome as any other characters.
