Quick Tip: Netflix’s Daredevil

Quick Tip: Netflix’s Daredevil

If you haven’t seen Netflix’s original Daredevil series yet, you should give it a binge watch, ASAP. Starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil himself, the show has been a massive success – as of the time of this post, it boasts a 98% RottenTomatoes rating and is up for three Primetime Emmy Nominations.

Drawing on the same source material as the 2005 Ben Affleck movie of the same name, the show explores the origin story of Marvel’s Silver Age superhero. Blinded in an accident as a child, Matt discovers that his other senses have been tremendously heightened, allowing him to “see” without seeing, and resolves to use his superhuman abilities for good.

At the end of the first season’s final episode (don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler), Daredevil gets his classic set of red and yellow body armor, complete with mask and devil horns. During every mission and fight scene up until that point though, he wears a simple black mask and some basic all-black gear. It’s a costume idea that’s recognizable and extremely easy to DIY:

How to make a DIY Daredevil Costume

Daredevil’s mask can be DIY’ed with something as simple as a black T-shirt, with the sleeves tied behind your head, but the problem with that is that T-shirt fabric is difficult to see through. For this reason, we recommend using a Black Morphsuit mask, which is designed with visibility in mind. The Spandex mask zips up in the back, one size fits most, and you can still add on your own extra “tails” of fabric for maximum authenticity.

A tight-fitting long-sleeve T-shirt, a pair of black cargo pants, some black leather gloves, and black combat boots should all be easy enough to come across. Add some tactical leg holsters and belts to complete the look, and get a couple of thick wooden dowels to mimic Daredevil’s dual baton weapons. You can even use drumsticks in a pinch – they should be about that length, anyways.

As a bonus, it’s pretty easy to put together a Matt Murdock cosplay, too. When he’s not Daredevil, he’s a clean-cut lawyer, alongside his longtime college friend Foggy Nelson. If you’ve got a gray business suit, a white shirt, and a black tie, then you’re already 90% of the way there (if not, these are all things that are available cheaply at the thrift store). There’s just a few other accessories that you’ll need to complete the look.

First off, and most importantly, are Matt’s sunglasses. Since Daredevil is blind (in the conventional sense, that is), he wears dark glasses. This pair of round sunglasses is the perfect fit: we borrowed them from a vampire costume, which is appropriate given that Daredevil is another character that only comes out at night.

You’ll also need a briefcase – any old black briefcase from the thrift store or a garage sale will do – and a cane. To make your own cane, just take a long wooden dowel and spray paint it white. With a friend, you can make a Matt Murdock/Daredevil group costume – think of it as a “before and after” or a “day and night” combination.
